Documentary Films, Built Around the Story

Every project starts differently. Some clients come to us with a subject, an idea, or a question they want to explore. Others have a detailed brief, campaign, or formal RFP.

We can join at any stage and lead the project from story development through production, post-production, and final delivery, whether the film takes place in one location or across multiple countries. We build each project around the client’s goals, the audience, the subject, and what the story needs.

Ways to Work Together

Most projects take shape in one of three broad ways: a standalone film, a series, or an ongoing partnership. These are starting points rather than fixed packages, with each shaped around the needs of the project.

A Film

One story, explored in depth.

We create standalone short documentaries around people, ideas, and subjects worth understanding. That might mean introducing an organization or initiative, exploring a research project or complex subject, following a person or process, bringing a client story or case study to life, or marking a particular moment such as an anniversary or a launch.

The form grows out of the story. Some films are built around intimate interviews and supporting images, while others rely on deeper access and observation over time.

A Series

One subject, explored through multiple short films.

A series can take the form of a collection, with each film exploring a different person, team, process, approach, or perspective within the same subject. Or it can unfold more serially, with each film acting as a chapter in a larger story that develops over time.

A series can also form the backbone of a campaign, with individual films released over time across websites, social channels, or other platforms. It can be developed as a complete collection from the beginning or grow gradually as new stories emerge.

Ongoing Partnerships

For organizations with stories to tell throughout the year.

We work with clients on long-term documentary partnerships built around recurring subjects, campaigns, programs, or communities. Depending on the need, that can include standalone films, recurring series, or custom formats designed for different channels while maintaining a consistent documentary approach across the work.

Ongoing partnerships allow us to become familiar with an organization, its people, and its world. Over time, that shared understanding makes development more efficient and creates a body of work that feels connected without becoming formulaic.

Our Process

The process should feel as considered as the finished film. We work closely with our clients throughout, keeping communication open, decisions clear, and everyone aligned from the first questions through the final cut.

Discover

We start with curiosity. Through research and conversations, we build a deep understanding of the client’s world, the subject matter, the audience, and what the film needs to accomplish.

Depending on the project, that might mean speaking with internal teams, reviewing existing material, or exploring potential subjects. The goal is to arrive at a clear direction together before deciding exactly how the film should take shape.

Develop

We turn that direction into a story and a production plan. We identify and pre-interview subjects, shape the narrative, define the tone and visual approach, and develop a treatment that gives everyone a shared understanding of the film before production begins.

From there, we work through access, locations, scheduling, logistics, and crew, building the production around what the story, scope, and resources require.

Film

With a clear direction and production plan in place, we move into filming. The approach and scale follow what we developed together, from focused shoots with small teams to larger productions across multiple locations.

From there, the material moves into the edit, where the film is shaped, refined, and carried through to the final cut.

What We Bring to the Work

Story at Every Stage

By the time filming begins, we have a clear story, direction, and shared understanding of what the film needs to achieve. But unlike scripted content, a documentary continues to evolve as we make it.

Throughout production and into the edit, we keep shaping the story around what we discover while staying anchored to the direction we agreed on together. The aim is to let those discoveries make the film stronger without losing sight of what it needs to achieve.

A Documentary Mindset

For us, documentary is more than a visual style. It’s a mindset. We choose the team, tools, and filmmaking approach around the story and the people at the center of it, rather than forcing every project into the same production model.

Sometimes that means one or two filmmakers disappearing into the background and capturing real situations as they unfold. Other stories call for a larger crew or a more deliberately crafted visual approach. The method can change, but the priority stays the same: use the filmmaking toolkit in service of the people and the story, not the other way around.

International by Practice

Our projects regularly cross borders, languages, and production cultures. Depending on the film, we can travel with a core team, work with trusted local filmmakers, direct elements remotely, or combine these approaches across a multi-country production.

For distributed productions, we create clear creative and visual briefs so everyone is working toward the same film. We’re also used to developing projects virtually, often working closely with clients through video meetings long before anyone meets in person. The goal is to keep communication close and the storytelling consistent, wherever the production happens.
